Death

UprightTransformation, endings, transition, letting go, rebirth, inevitable change, closing doors
ReversedResistance to change, fear of endings, clinging to the past, refusing to let go, stagnation, delayed transformation

Narrative Meaning

Death is the most feared card in the deck and also one of the most misunderstood. In all the years tarot has been read, this card almost never means literal death — what it means is that something is over. And the thing about endings is that they are not optional. The Death card doesn't come to ask your permission. It comes to tell you that a chapter has closed whether you're ready or not. But nothing new can be born without something first dying. The caterpillar doesn't get to keep being a caterpillar and also become a butterfly.

Practical Note

Something in your life is ending or needs to end — a relationship, a chapter, a version of yourself you've outgrown. This isn't punishment. This is transformation. The door closing behind you is what makes it possible to walk through the next one. Let it end. Reversed, you already know something is over but you're refusing to release it. The clinging isn't saving it — it's just prolonging the in between and delaying whatever is waiting to begin on the other side.
An ending is completing so a beginning can emerge. Trust what is transforming.
