The Devil

UprightAddiction, materialism, bondage, shadow self, entrapment, desire, excess, co-dependency
ReversedFreedom, releasing chains, breaking patterns, restoring control, self-awareness, reclaiming power

Narrative Meaning

The Devil isn't some external force coming for you — it's the chains you forgot you put on yourself. This is the dopamine chasing card. The hit, the rush, the familiar comfort of the thing that clouds your judgment just enough that you stop asking hard questions. In the classic imagery, two figures stand chained to the Devil's throne, but look closer: the chains are loose. They could leave. They're just not. That's the gut-punch of this card. The bondage is chosen, even if it stopped feeling like a choice a long time ago.

Practical Note

Something has more power over you than you're admitting. This isn't a judgment — it's an invitation to look clearly at what you're attached to and ask whether it's actually serving you or just giving you a hit. Where have you handed over your agency? What feels impossible to walk away from, and why? Reversed, the spell is breaking and the fog is lifting — but now comes the reckoning. You're seeing the consequences clearly.
Attachment, shadow patterns, or limiting beliefs are at work. Name what binds you — the chain loosens the moment you see it clearly.
